Happy 2014 - 2015 school year to all of our parents, teachers, and students!
The past couple of weeks have been jam-packed and quite busy! The Hillcrest counseling program has made a lot of exciting changes for this year and as it is my second year as a member of the Hillcrest community, I feel much more confident as well as excited for all of the new opportunities we have to offer!
STUDENT COUNCIL
- As of October, we now have a student council! The council is composed of 4th and 5th grade students who have been chosen to represent their grades and serve as leaders in their community. The council will focus on three areas of concentration for this year: Helping our community, our school, and our students. After a unanimous vote, the council wanted to spend these next few weeks building opportunities for fellow students, and incorporating PBIS into rewards and incentives.
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE LESSONS
- Ms. Malarney has gone into some 3rd grade classrooms to teach lessons on being a good sport. She also went into all 4 kindergarten classrooms to do a "Meet the Counselor" lesson, where she also discussed and reviewed PBIS.
SMALL GROUPS
- Ms. Malarney will be continuing her 3rd grade boys group, which will start up again in mid-November. It is Ms. Malarney's hope that the boys group will empower some of our male students through lessons based around self-esteem, cultural awareness, and making good choices to be college and career ready.
- There will also be a 1st grade social skills group that will help students make friends, recognize social standards, and learn everyday etiquette.
